Goldy Hyder, President and CEO of the Business Council of Canada:
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets are important, as is the process to assess progress against those targets. But even more essential is a coherent, cost-effective plan that clearly sets out the responsibilities of governments, businesses and Canadians in reducing GHG emissions between now and 2050. Developing that plan will require a great deal of hard work and consultation among levels of government and other stakeholders.
Meantime, Canada’s leading enterprises are not waiting for future targets. Companies across the country are moving ahead proactively by developing and deploying innovative technologies that are key to achieving ambitious climate goals. Clear guidelines, a predictable policy framework and a supportive investment environment will help them get there faster.
We look forward to working constructively with the federal government as it develops a roadmap for the net-zero target.
